You Can Beat The Odds

Did you know that from the first time you decided to go into business for yourself the odds were already stacked against you? Small independent construction businesses have a greater risk of failure than any other type of small business.

The construction businesses that do succeed have to be skilled not only in their specific trade but they must also be successful marketers, salespeople, negotiators and business managers. You must become a contractor marketing wiz to market construction services.

According to a recent study by Dun & Bradstreet “Businesses with fewer than 20 employees have only a 37% chance of surviving four years and only 9% chance of surviving 10 years.” Of these failed businesses, only 10% of them close involuntarily due to bankruptcy and the remaining 90% close because the business was not successful or didn’t provide the level of income desired or was too much work for their efforts.

How do these statistics breakdown:

  • 30% fail in the 1st year
  • 50% fail by the 2nd year
  • 75% fail but he 3rd year and
  • 90% fail by the 10th year

When I started my remodeling company I made the big mistake of thinking that if I could swing a hammer and put something together then I was going to be successful in this business. Well the start REALITY was that I was so far from the truth. If it wasn’t for my marketing background I would have been just another statistic. But I figured out early on in the game that I had to be in the Marketing Business.

To keep you businesses growing you have to develop new skills. Most people in the industry learn those “new” skills by trial and error and not by any formal business training.

How many errors can you afford to make and still stay in business?

This year I have worked with over 40 contractors in my Maverick Group Coaching Program and I have watched them grow their businesses and make some significant money even while the economy was taking a nose dive.

How did they do it?

Each one of them became masters at marketing selling their services, and better business managers. They took the information that I gave them and implemented it. For some it wasn’t easy at first. But once they started making changes each and every month they saw the immediate results.

Why am I telling you this? Well, if you have been one of the unlucky contractors that tried to get into my coaching program this past year only to discover that I couldn’t take anyone else you just might be in luck.

Starting in 2008 I will be starting a new group. But this time there are going to be a few changes. I am limiting the size of this group to somewhere between
25 – 30 contractors. The biggest change  I am going to make for this new group is that I am making this an area exclusive opportunity. What does this mean? Well it means that your competitors won’t be in on the monthly 90+ minute monthly call and they won’t be getting any of the materials that you are getting. I am even going to implement this in my other groups in 2008. I am making all my members re-apply to get back in.
